Simon Mathews

Chairman

Chairman of the Bovey Tracey Players since April 2025

Newsletter May 2025

Good evening everyone.

My name is Simon, and as many of you will know, I was appointed chairman of the BOVEY TRACEY Players in April 2025. My thanks to all of those who voted at the AGM - I promise to do my best together with the new committee to uphold and build upon the legacy that is the BOVEY TRACEY Players, a community theatre group that has been in existence for over 50 years.

As a committee, we have already begun to think about the tasks ahead of us and to that end, we had our first meeting just a week ago. We have begun to identify our priorities for the next twelve months and those include (in no particular order):

  • Performance, performance, performance!

    • We aim to do a murder mystery and a full two-act show before the end of the year.

  • We hope to collaborate with other local community theatre groups and the Youth café, to bring you a variety of 'informal' productions including a mummers play, and perhaps a one-act play at one of the many organised events that take place in BOVEY TRACEY over the course of the year eg Party in the Park and the Green Festival.

  • We will be continuing with our Pint and a Play evenings to which you're all very welcome, of course (see main website for details)

  • You'll be seeing a lot more of us in your social media feeds as we branch out into Instagram and TikTok as well as on our usual Facebook page - the BOVEY TRACEY Players.

  • We are planning further workshops over the course of the year with our professional colleagues - Katy Kerley, Patrice Naiambana - and our musicians, Peter Whittle and Martin Rollings. Non-members are welcome to join us, of course.

  • In the absence of a 'home' (there's no sign of the Dolphin re-opening any time soon) and with the Paradiso still some way from finished, the committee are looking for ways to 'make' theatre happen in different locations and with stripped back resources ie without a full set and with minimum lighting and sound enhancement. All suggestions appreciated - we have had a few already!

  • Finally, we've been discussing the means by which we keep in touch with you, our membership and supporters. We've got this new website but we also plan to send out newsletters keeping you up to date with where we're at and what we're up to. Please make sure that you're on our mailing list by contacting us at admin@boveytraceyplayers.co.uk to register your interest.

It only remains for me to say thank you for your continued support.

Looking forward to bringing you further news of our progress in the June issue of the Chairman's newsletter.

Many thanks,

Simon
